Rustic Contemporary Planters for Your Inside Garden

It’s that time again! The time to shop for kitchen window planters for our herb garden. If you remember last year, I dreamt of Mod Pots, but they ended up being too small. So, this year I am leaning more towards planters that have a rustic contemporary feel in neutral, organic colors.

Spirit & Flesh Guest Post: Farm Fresh

A few weeks ago, I headed to a horse farm in upstate New York to style a Frida Kahlo inspired photo shoot. Here is a sneak peak with some of my favorite looks, for the full editorial, visit Spirit & Flesh Magazine.

Inspired by the Mexico City exhibit featuring clothes from Frida Kahlo’s recently opened closet, this editorial pairs new and vintage pieces in true Frida style. Set on a horse farm in upstate New York, photographer Metin Oner captures the stoic styling of blogger, Christina DeSmet. Braided hair styles by Laureen Krawse and bold beauty by Nicole Sievers help bring out Monica Granillo’s inner Frida.

Everyday Imagery

The past week was filled with preparing for the Frida Kahlo shoot, taking a day trip upstate, getting the apartment ready for my Mom to arrive and a studio visit with Tableaux Vivants, where I learned to make latex collars.

Feeling Very Frida

Frida Kahlo, Floral Crown, Lace Bull Skull, Vintage Rings, Braids, Wrap | DeSmittenI’m in the midst of pulling clothes and accessories for a Frida Kahlo themed photo shoot taking place at a horse farm upstate this week. Recently, Frida Kahlo’s closet was opened for the first time, after her death in 1954. As a result, some of her iconic clothing and accessories are on display in Mexico City for an exhibit entitled Appearances Can Be Deceiving. My monochromatic inspiration board is for mood, although there will be colorful outfits and flowers in the editorial. Stay tuned to see behind the scenes photos later this week!

Warm Up Any Room with Ethnic Rugs

Our hunt for a new office rug began a few months ago when we noticed that Henry, our cow hide that currently resides on the office floor, was going bald due to the rolling office chairs. With a nearly neutral hued office, I thought the floor covering could use a little color. For me – the lover of all things neutral – to suggest such a thing, shocked my boyfriend at first. I decided a colorful ethnic rug would be perfect for our space. Ethnic rugs (whether Moroccan, Tibetan, Kilim, Oriental or Persian) add a sense of bohmia, nostalgia and warmth to any room. After months of thinking about getting a new rug, I finally put together my inspiration.

Naturally, I am drawn to the graphic ethnic rugs that are grounded with ivory or black. Even though these are very much my style, they won’t add much color to our office. (But it would hide the cat hair quite well). I can’t rule this option out completely.

I love the pop of color and the grand scale motifs of these red ethnic rugs. They immediately warm up their stark surroundings while keeping the space feeling open and bright.

With any new purchase for the home, the search takes time. I will let you know who Henry’s replacement is once we find them!

Spirit & Flesh Guest Post: Still Here

I’m pleased to share with you a sneak peek of an editorial shoot I styled for Spirit & Flesh Magazine’s blog, based on the theme of their next issue, Still Here. The spirit inside vintage clothing is Still Here, even decades after it was originally designed and worn for the first time. I used Same State Vintage clothing for this shoot.
