Function. The utmost important word in every aspect of design, whether you are designing clothing or interiors. Over the past year and a half that we’ve had our cabin, I’m realizing that the most important projects have not been cosmetic at all, rather they have been purely functional. One of the first rooms we began to renovate was our utility room.

There is nothing more inspiring than a new year, a fresh start and the wonder of what’s to come in the months ahead. Make your 2015 resolutions today. Keep them simple and attainable and revisit them every few months to keep yourself on track. A year ago today, I made my resolutions and I am happy to report that I stayed on track for most of the year. This year I’d like to renew these resolutions, to improve upon them. Here are my renewed resolutions of 2015… I will continue to make an effort to consume less in 2015, and focus on building my forever wardrobe (with my 5 Piece French Wardrobe challenge restarting today).

I spent the better part of last week trying to make a dress to wear to a wedding, but it never came together. The wedding came and went, while the dress hung in limbo in my studio. I realized that the dress will stay unfinished because my heart wasn’t in it. The entire time I worked on the dress, all I could think about were the yards of double-faced boiled wool that sat under my table. I bought it in the dead of summer and didn’t think about it again until a chill hit the air.

I am always jealous of men when getting dressed to attend a wedding, no matter what the occasion, a suit will always do. So I took this idea and translated it to womenswear, designing separates for the event in lieu of a dress. Inspired by clean, deliberate lines, the idea of tie back aprons and the contrast between shadow and light led me to the most classic of color schemes, black and ivory…. I know, shocker! If you follow me on instagram, then you already got a sneak peek of how I wore my designs to the wedding. Tomorrow I will show you how versatile these separates are, so stay tuned!

If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know all about Project de. – my vow to make one garment a month for the entire year. This week, I am preparing for a photo shoot featuring some of the pieces I’ve made over the past few years. I am looking forward to having my good friend, and talented photographer, Valeria Castillo work her magic behind the camera. I put together my inspiration board, and thought I’d share it with you today. Inspired by simple shadows on minimal backgrounds to showcase the clothes. Next week I will have behind the scenes photos to share, so be sure to check back!
