In my mind, basics are seasonless as well as timeless. As the stores begin to purge their Fall merchandise to make way for Spring stock, transitional pieces are the best investments right now. After assessing my closet yesterday, I realized there are only a few basics to buy now: A classic white shirt, a slip dress and simple black pumps.
The classic white shirt: White is very hard to keep clean, so I don’t want to drop a lot of cash on a white shirt. I rather find a style that fits perfectly, one that I can re-buy each season after it gets stained or yellowed from wear. After reading this article in the February issue of Elle, I am hoping Gap’s new creative director, Rebekka Bay will come up with this perfect style for me. Until then, I have my eye on this Cos shirt. I love the tiny collar, oversized silhouette and angular hem. I am willing to take suggestions as well, so bring them on!
The slip dress: I love this Organic by John Patrick bias cut silk slip dress with pockets, from My Chameleon (pictured). But at $440, it would definitely fall out of the basics category, so I might opt for the cheaper version made of cupro, sans pockets, from La Garçonne for $120. It comes in four neutral colors, and doesn’t that define a must-have basic?
The black pump: Living in the city, heel height and comfort are key for a classic black pump. A pointed toe is a must and nothing over 3 1/2″ inches will do. My top choices of the moment are from Gianvito Rossi (pictured), Saint Laurent and Manolo Blahnik. With price tags above $400, this might count as 1 of the 5 pieces for my 5 Piece French Wardrobe.
